Adding 'Criteria' to your dashboards and reports is the same as 'Filtering' data in these documents.
There are many ways that criteria can impact the data you are seeing. In this overview, some of the most common usages of criteria will be highlighted.
The criteria bar
Dimensions may be added to the Criteria bar to provide drop down filtering options for the end users. These criteria will work as Global criteria, i.e., they will apply to all objects in the dashboard/report.

Slicers
A Slicer object is an option to integrate the drop down filter directly in the dashboard/report, rather than having it as a separated Criteria bar. Slicers can also be set up as Lists or Search objects.

Criteria editor
As a Designer user, you can apply criteria to your dashboards/reports via the Criteria Editor. As opposed to criteria from the Criteria bar or criteria from Slicers, criteria set in the Criteria Editor cannot be changed by the Consumer users.

Local criteria
A Local criteria may be added to an individual object. In Designer mode, first select the object, then apply the Local criteria from the Criteria Smartpad to open the Criteria Editor.
Drill down criteria
As a Consumer user, you can click any dimension member in an object - e.g., an Invoice Number in a crosstab or a Product Group in a pie chart - to perform a Drill down criteria. The selected dimension member will immediately work as a criteria on the other objects in the dashboard.
