Context-Aware Highlighting of Related Dimensions and Measures

When building a chart or table, users often select a measure or dimension and then look for other relevant fields to add. However, in large datasets with many fields, it's not always obvious which ones are logically or relationally connected. I suggest implementing an intelligent highlighting system that visually cues users about relationships between the dimensions and measures they’ve already selected and those remaining in the list.

Along with adding more dimensions or measures to the table, the highlighting would adjust in the source data view.

It would be a nice addition to add in mouse-over tooltips on a measure/dimension along with the description, that shows why a field is related, and show the relationship path (e.g., Customer Number → Invoice Number → Revenue).

It may be combined with a filtering, as suggested here.

I believe this would help especially newer users understand the data model more quickly, and also reduce trial-and-error when combining fields.

  • This would help us a lot. In some projects we do a documentation of the relationships manually in other tools, but it's a lot of work (and nobody like documentation ;-) )
