How to compare period chosen by end user with same the period previous year?

Hi

Is it possible to let the consumer user choose a date interval, and then show sales from this interval compared to the same interval previous year?

I have tried combining a user dimension with the slider feature, but it is not working for me.

In the picture below I have selected February 2022 and gotten the sales qty for the item, but I would like to also see sales qty for February 2021.
Is it possible or is there a better way to do it?

Best Regards

  • Hi Christoffer,

I would create a User Dimension with two dynamic members:

    • This year
    • Last year

Initially, if used in e.g. a crosstab, this would show data for those two full years (even though 'this year' may only have data until august at time of writing).

In another object, or in the criteria bar, or even in a time slider, you can add a pure Month dimension. It is important that the Month dimension only contains months. The months must not be part of a hierarchy (in your screenshot they are part of a hierarchy - which is probably causing a problem to you).

Now, when you select 'February' from the Month dimension, the object with User Dimension will show February data of this year compared to February data of last year.

  • Hi Ole

Thank you for the reply. I see how this solution can work. For example if I want to compare February 2021 with February 2020, I can just add a member in the user dimension for two years ago, in order to see all three years.

But is it possible choose and see a specific period down to the date?
E.g. if I want to see a date interval from the 20th of February to the 10th of March?
Or even the odd situation where you want to see a period from the 15th of December 2020 to the 15th of January 2021?

The closest I have come is to use the pure Week dimension, but it's not that specific

  • Hi Christoffer,

You probably can't do it with the dimensions you have on hand right now.

But, if you could create a new dimension (a hierarchy) with just months and day of month numbers (1-31), then I think the '20th of February to the 10th of March' scenario would be possible. I am less confident about the 'crossing into a new year' scenario though.

  • Thank you Ole

I think a new dimension with a hierachy would work, but for now I will just stick with the week dimension for my dashboard :)
