Components Overview

The Components feature allows you to save one or more objects as a single, centrally managed Component document.

When designing a Dashboard or a Report, you can insert a Component from its saved location. Components can be reused across any number of documents. A document may contain multiple Components and can even be built entirely from Components if desired.

Because Components are centrally managed, any changes you make to a Component document will automatically update all documents where that Component has been used.

Creating a Component

  1. Enter Designer mode and select one or more objects—either from an existing document or from a new document you are currently designing.
  2. Select objects from the canvas or the Object list (multi-select is supported).
  3. Create the Component:
    • From the canvas: With the objects selected, choose Create component from the Design menu.
    • From the Object list: Right-click the selected objects and choose Create Component.

Components are saved in your TARGIT environment’s folder structure, just like any other document type.

Tip: Consider creating a dedicated folder for Components.

Important: When a Component is inserted into another document, it is referenced by both its name and path (absolute or relative). Renaming or moving a Component—or moving folders that contain Components—may cause the Component to become unavailable in host documents.

Adding a Component

To insert a Component into a Dashboard or Report:

  1. Click Component from the Design menu.
  2. Select the Component you want to add and click OK.
  3. Position and resize the Component on the canvas as you would any other object.

When working with Components in this way, we use this terminology:

  • A Component is created from one or more objects and saved as a Component document.
  • When a Component is inserted in another document, it is inserted in a Component container.
  • The document containing one or more Component containers is called the Host document.

The Object list

Components are added to the Object list with names matching the names of the saved Component documents.

Important: When you add a Component (or any other object type) it will by default be added to the top of the Object list - i.e. it will be added on top of - or in front of - all the other objects. You may need to reorder objects in the Object list to achieve the desired dashboard behavior.

Editing a Component

Open a Component from the Start menu, just like any other document.

Alternatively, in a host document, select the Component and then select Open component from the Properties tab on the left.

Any changes you save will immediately apply to all documents that use that Component.

Examples of modifications you can make:

  • Add or remove objects
  • Change object content
  • Rearrange objects
  • Adjust fonts and styles

Components with Multiple Layouts

A Component may contain multiple Layouts. When inserting such a Component into a document, you must select which Layout to use.

Component Criteria

While editing a Component, you can apply Component criteria. In terms of cardinality, Component criteria fall between Page criteria and Local criteria.

If a Component contains Component criteria, and a host document later applies Local criteria using the same dimension and the same operator, the Local criteria will override the Component criteria.

See Criteria overrides

Deleting, moving or renaming a Component

When deleting, moving or renaming a component that has been used in other documents, you will get a warning with information about the documents that will be affected by this action.

Limitations

Although Component documents are designed similarly to other dashboard documents, not all dashboard or report features are supported within them.

Below is a non-exhaustive list of features that are not supported in Component documents:

  • Notification agents - Monitor this value and Monitor this object.
  • Scheduled jobs. A component can be included in a scheduled document, but the component itself cannot be scheduled independently.
  • Repeater pages in reports for crosstabs in Component container.
  • Components can only be created as Dashboard layouts. Report layouts are not supported.
